How Hush works, and its limits

Hush changes how a page looks on your screen. It cannot change what a site sends you, so some switches have side effects. They are listed here, site by site.

How Hush works

Hush runs only on youtube.com, x.com, reddit.com, linkedin.com and instagram.com. When you turn a switch on, it hides that part of the page with a style rule. For things a style rule cannot spot, like a post labeled Ad or Suggested for you, it looks at the short label at the top of the post, on your device. Switches apply right away, without a reload, and turning a site off in the popup brings everything back.

Instagram: fewer posts at a time

Instagram loads your feed in batches of about 10 to 12 posts. Hush hides ads, Reels and suggested posts inside each batch, but it cannot ask Instagram for more of the posts you want instead. With all three switches on, often only 1 or 2 posts of a batch are left, so you reach the end of the feed sooner and wait a moment while Instagram fetches the next batch.

Once you have seen the recent posts from the accounts you follow, Instagram fills the feed with suggestions. With Hide suggested posts and accounts on, the feed can look like it has ended. For a fuller feed, turn off Hide Reels in feed: Reels from accounts you follow come back, and ads and suggestions stay hidden.

Labels and languages

Ads and suggestions on X, LinkedIn and Instagram are found by their label, so Hush needs to know the word your language uses. It knows them in English and French, and ad labels in German, Spanish and Portuguese too. In other languages some ads or suggestions may stay visible. Reddit and YouTube do not depend on your language.

A brief flash

Most things are hidden before they are drawn. Posts found by their label can only be hidden once they appear, so on a slow connection an ad may show for a split second before it disappears.

YouTube

The dislike count is an estimate from Return YouTube Dislike, an independent service, since YouTube no longer shows dislikes. It is off by default and sends the ID of the video you watch to that service. Comments beside video works in the default layout; in theater mode, comments stay under the video.

X

Default to Following feed opens the Following tab when you go to Home. You can still switch to For you by hand; Hush picks Following again the next time you come back to Home.

Where Hush works

In Chrome and Firefox on a computer, and in browsers built on Chrome that install from the Chrome Web Store. It does not work in the mobile apps of these sites. On Reddit it supports the current design, not old.reddit.com. Private windows need your permission: allow Hush in incognito in Chrome, or in private windows in Firefox.

When a switch stops working

These sites change their pages often, and a change can break a switch until Hush is updated. If something you hid comes back, or something disappears that should not, write to contact@hush-media.dev with the site and the switch.
